On behalf of the APO and all present, I would like record a vote of thanks to my predecessor, Mr. Taito Waqa, for his commendable service as the APO Chairman over the past year. I hope to have the benefit of his advice whenever it may be needed.

In the midst of fast-paced economic globalization and trade liberalization that are now revolutionizing the world and hopefully changing it into a better place where advancement and prosperity are enjoyed by all, the Asia and Pacific region has a vital role to play. It will be a key driver in the future development of the world economy. In this context, productivity will still hold center stage. This makes the role of the APO that much more important and challenging. As members of the organization, we must be deeply involved. We will have plenty to do over the next three days. The agenda is full and the schedule is tight. I humbly seek your utmost support and cooperation so that we will have a meaningful and fruitful meeting.
Thank you.
