Secretary-General
The ninth APO Secretary-General, Ryuichiro Yamazaki, assumed office on 16 September 2010. He was unanimously elected at the 52nd session of the APO Governing Body in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in April 2010. Mr. Yamazaki is a native of Japan.
He received a B.A. (Economics) from Hitotsubashi University, Japan, and a B.A. (Foreign Service Training Program) from Williams College, USA.
Secretary-General Yamazaki has more than 40 years of experience in the Japanese government, the majority of which was with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His past assignments include ambassadorial postings in the Philippines and Vietnam; at the United Nations as Deputy Permanent Representative; and at the Doha Round as Ambassador for International Trade and Economy. He also served as the Japanese government's representative in the Japan-Mexico EPA/ETA negotiations; press secretary and spokesman deputy director-general, Foreign Policy Bureau; and the director-general for International Affairs of the Japan Self-Defense Agency.
