SUMMARY:Multicountry Observational Study Mission on Applications of Alternative Energy Sources for Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, while industry is rebounding from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the recent energy crisis has made the recovery path more difficult. The adverse impacts of climate change are visible as reports on floods\, droughts\, typhoons\, and record-high temperatures are becoming more frequent. This affects socioeconomic development at the grassroots level and calls for urgent action. Industry\, a major contributor to carbon emissions and pollution\, needs to explore alternatives to decarbonize its processes. \nRenewable energy sources such as solar\, wind\, hydro\, biomass\, etc. are ideal alternatives to address multifaceted challenges faced by industry. According to World Energy Transitions 2022 published by the International Renewable Energy Agency\, renewables are a significant contributor in efforts to reduce the current annual CO2 emissions of 36.9 gigatons. Renewables and other transition-related technologies are vital in achieving nationally determined contributions and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels\, as reported in the Glasgow Climate Pact during COP 26 held in 2021. Recently\, the ROC has prepared an action pathway to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 which includes energy and industrial transitions as key strategies. Maximizing renewable energy\, building zero-carbon fuel supply systems\, technological advances\, energy storage\, and the use of electric vehicles are some of those strategies. \nAligned with the APO Green Productivity concept of strengthening environmental performance while increasing the productivity and profitability of enterprises\, this study mission will examine decarbonizing energy-based activities and processes.
