SUMMARY:Accelerating Agrifood Innovations
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in agrifood must be accelerated for resilience against various challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and for enhanced productivity to meet increasing food demand. Dr. Paul Teng\, Managing Director and Dean of NIE International Pte. Ltd. and Adjunct Senior Fellow of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies\, Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore\, gives an overview of how to accelerate innovations in agrifood systems by reviewing past ones\, predicting upcoming ones\, and explaining key drivers of increasing demand. This P-Talk also discusses the role of the public and private sectors in advancing innovations in the Asia-Pacific by introducing the evolving Singapore Agrifood Ecosystem. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to: p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.

SUMMARY:Innovative Cold Chain Equipment for Fresh Food
DESCRIPTION:A study showed that 1.4 billion tons of perishable food is wasted worldwide due to inefficiencies within food supply chains. Cold chains are a solution to retain the quality and safety of perishable food from farm to fork\, but further innovation is needed for longer shelf-life and better quality to meet growing demand\, with broader adoption especially in developing countries. In this P-Innovator\, Yasushi Hori\, Director of MARS Company Inc.\, Japan\, introduces its innovative cold chain equipment. The Kuraban is a refrigerator that keeps food fresh three to 10 times longer using unique technology to generate high voltage within the container\, while the SeaSnow produces flaked ice from salted water to extend seafood freshness. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to: p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.

SUMMARY:Postpandemic SME Regrowth
DESCRIPTION:SMEs are the economic backbone in most countries. The global pandemic has hit SMEs hard and forced many to go out of business. Consultant Tushar Sharma\, Tata Consultancy Services Limited\, provides insights on regrowth strategies and approaches for SMEs in the postpandemic business landscape. Practical applications of a refined business model relying on digital platforms as well as new approaches to managing risk are also shared. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to: p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.

SUMMARY:Syrinx: Voice-restoring Technology
DESCRIPTION:Due to cancer\, stroke\, etc.\, approximately 300\,000 people worldwide lose their ability to speak every year. One way to restore the voice is with an electrolarynx device\, which generates robotic sound. The University of Tokyo doctoral course student Masaki Takeuchi and his team developed Syrinx\, a hands-free electrolarynx. The neck brace allows hands-free operation and generates vocal vibrations using voice-processing tools. From a productivity viewpoint\, this innovation can help persons with disabilities who have lost their voices to return to their normal lives without embarrassment and work productively through effective communication with others\, which was previously challenging for them. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to: p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.

SUMMARY:Intelligent Automation in the Service Sector
DESCRIPTION:This P-Talk discusses how intelligent automation (a combination of robotic process automation and artificial intelligence) in the service sector can offer unprecedented economies of scale and scope\, maximizing service-sector productivity\, as most costs are incurred in their development. Physical robots cost a fraction of adding to the headcount\, and virtual robots can be deployed at negligible incremental cost. Virtual service robots (e.g.\, chatbots and virtual agents) can be scaled at close to zero incremental cost. Such dramatic scalability does not apply only to virtual service robots such as chatbots but also to visible ones such as holograms. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to: p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.
