SUMMARY:Workshop on Food Supply Chains in the Informal Sector
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered the extensive worsening of food insecurity worldwide and threatens to create long-term malnutrition and negative health consequences. One major threat is the disruption of informal food chains and the limited efforts to-date of leveraging their resilience capacity (National Library of Medicine\, 2020). \nFood supply chains in the informal sector play an important role in complementing formal-sector supply chains. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened food insecurity\, especially in the producer-driven informal sector\, compounding food insecurity issues worldwide and increasing health risks. Developing countries face difficulties in food safety and quality control in informal food chains due to a lack of information and skills\, limited resources\, and weak cooperative work systems. \nThis workshop will examine the benefits and potential of informal food chains\, review case studies of safety and quality control in informal food supply\, and analyze opportunities to improve informal food supply chains in APO members. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Study Mission on Overseas Business Development Assistance to SMEs for Innovative Products and Services
DESCRIPTION:According to the Asia and Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC)\, SMEs accounted for more than 97% of all businesses in the Asia-Pacific region\, employing over half of the workforce in 2022. Many SMEs have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic\, although they are gradually recovering from the economic losses. Japan is facing a population decline and shrinking domestic market in addition to damage caused by the pandemic\, requiring its SMEs to seek new international business opportunities. \nSustainability is increasingly important in the Asia-Pacific region for many reasons\, including environmental concerns\, social responsibility\, and economic benefits. Sustainable business models are needed to create a comparative advantage. With a culture of innovation and history of enforcing environmental laws\, Japan has a strong focus on sustainability and is a leading producer of sustainable goods and services. Japanese SMEs play an important role in developing sustainable green products. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Conference on Enhancing Employability of Workers in the Informal Economy
DESCRIPTION:The informal economy has expanded over time to become a source of livelihood for billions (World Bank\, 2022). In the Asia-Pacific region\, the informal sector employs over 61% of workers (ILO\, 2020). Despite their role in creating economic value\, informal workers are vulnerable due to low wages\, unfavorable working conditions\, and poor social support and protection by labor laws. \nEnhancing the employability of informal-sector workers in the formal sector requires a holistic approach. On an individual level\, skill gaps could be addressed by equipping informal workers with technical competencies and providing access to vocational training. On a government level\, more schemes for informal workers’ skill development and offering incentives and subsidies to companies employing them are among possible measures. \nThis conference will examine the existing skill development\, supportive policies\, and enabling environments to increase the employability of informal economy workers in APO member economies. \nFor more details please click on PN.
