SUMMARY:Workshop on Women's Entrepreneurship in the Digital Economy
DESCRIPTION:Entrepreneurship is a major impetus for innovation\, productivity\, and long-term economic growth. The digital economy provides fertile ground for entrepreneurs to flourish as digital technologies open up opportunities for greater diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in society and enable more talent\, including women entrepreneurs\, to participate in economic activities. Access to enabling technologies\, markets\, and opportunities for greater gender equality\, however\, does not immediately translate into a supportive business environment for women and their meaningful participation in the economy. To fully harness the benefits of digital technologies for empowering women and unleashing their potential for enhancing productivity and innovation\, it is necessary to understand the relationships and synergies among technologies\, entrepreneurship\, and women’s participation and leadership. \nA report from the Global System for Mobile Communications in 2021 estimated that fewer than 40% of women in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa could access mobile internet services. APO research in 2021 on Economic\, Gender\, and Digital Divides: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Philippines also indicated that the digital and technology divide remained severe in Asia and that it adversely affected women more than men. Government agencies and the private sector need to provide infrastructure\, cultivate skills and competencies\, and raise social awareness to foster a conducive environment for women to leverage digital tools\, start and run businesses\, and provide new momentum for economic growth\, innovation\, and employment. \nEchoing UN SDG 5\, Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls\, this workshop aims at strengthening APO members’ policy formulation for innovation and productivity enhancement which supports a more inclusive society. It will discuss and provide references on government and organizational strategies for women’s empowerment and leadership in businesses in the digital economy\, thereby reaffirming the APO’s support for inclusive growth. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Development of Public-sector Productivity Specialists
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has hit organizations and employees in every sector worldwide in unprecedented ways\, including the public sector. Almost all governments implemented strict lockdowns\, contact tracing measures\, and digitization to save lives while ensuring the continuity of essential services such as healthcare\, education\, public administration\, and food delivery. With restrictions on people’s mobility still imposed even after two years\, difficulties in operating and delivering basic public services continue. The situation also changed the ways employees in publicsector organizations operate such as adjusting to remote work and adopting digital solutions to ensure that services can be provided while enhancing performance and productivity. \nRecognizing the importance of public-sector performance in serving citizens’ needs under the new normal\, the APO continues examining methods and approaches to improve work processes\, motivation and skills of employees\, and managerial capability to optimize public-sector resources in the region. These factors constitute the fundamentals of the APO Public-sector Productivity Framework. This course aims at strengthening the capabilities of the public sector in APO members by rebuilding and reshaping workforce skillset requirements under the new normal. \nParticipants will be trained in the concepts\, approaches\, tools\, and techniques needed by productivity specialists in the public sector and develop the skillsets for the required competencies. NPOs are requested to nominate professionals who are expected to work as productivity specialists for the public sector. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Biodigesters and Green Productivity
DESCRIPTION:This P-Talk discusses biodigester systems that convert manure and other biowaste into biogas to provide households with clean cooking fuel\, thereby reducing exposure to indoor pollution. The units result in decreased use of traditional fuel such as wood and carbon emissions. The bioslurry is then used as organic fertilizer for farming and reduces the water required for agriculture. The approach addresses the key Green Productivity themes of resource recycling\, green energy\, green factories\, and agroinnovation. Shuvasish Bhowmick of ATEC Australia International also speaks on the impact of biodigesters on clean cooking\, the health and livelihoods of women and girls\, and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to: p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Green Productivity
DESCRIPTION:The Glasgow Climate Pact\, which was the outcome of the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 26) held in November 2021\, aimed to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C by focusing on mitigation\, adaptation\, financing\, and collaboration. More than 150 countries that contribute over 90% of world GDP have made net-zero commitments and set new 2030 emission targets. Moreover\, emerging capacity-building gaps and the need to catalyze climate action are recognized. \nThe Asia-Pacific region mainly consists of developing and least developed countries that need to explore pathways and adopt methods to achieve their emission reduction targets as soon as possible. They must also encourage industrial growth while simultaneously reducing dependency on finite natural resources to sustain economic progress. The APO introduced the GP concept in 1994 to combine productivity and quality enhancement with better environmental performance. In the current scenario of globalization\, business volatility\, and constraints related to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the implementation of GP methodology can help enterprises improve their competitiveness and maintain profitability\, leading to overall greener growth. \nIn the APO Vision 2025 of Inclusive\, Innovation-led Productivity Growth\, the promotion and adoption of GP is one of the strategic thrusts. Since 2001\, various projects have been conducted to build a critical mass of GP specialists who can act as consultants\, trainers\, and promoters to assist industry in decoupling business growth from environmental degradation. The introduction of the Accreditation Program in 2018 elevated the role of the APO as an accreditation body to develop and accredit NPOs to become certification bodies (CBs) of GP specialists. The related productivity specialist and publicsector productivity specialist schemes were also introduced. The APO-GPS 201:2019: Certification Scheme and Competency Standards for GP Specialists details the requirements\, and this five-day course is a prerequisite for APO certification\, after which participants will undergo evaluation and assessment by the accredited certification bodies. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Innovative Technologies in Perishable Product Supply Chains for Small Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Perishables such as fruit and vegetables require supply chains that reliably deliver fresh products to consumers. After harvest\, long-term preservation of perishable products is difficult. Fruit and vegetables need to be sold quickly to avoid food loss and waste. For example\, leafy vegetables change color quickly. Even though they are still edible\, their price drops\, causing retailers to lose profits. Reducing such food losses is one of the UN SDG Goal 12 targets\, i.e.\, SDG 12.3\, which states\, “By 2030\, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains\, including postharvest losses.” \nPreservation of quality contributes not only to the stable supply of perishables to consumers but also to increasing farmers’ income. To maintain the quality of fruit and vegetables\, careful handling at harvest and proper environmental control postharvest are necessary. Cold chain systems are therefore indispensable for perishable supply chains. \nMarketing of perishable products\, however\, is difficult for small farmers because they are usually located far from consumers and establishing cold chains is costly. Consequently\, they often organize agricultural cooperatives and combine harvest sales. Another strategy is leveraging now readily available digital platforms. ICT facilitates connections between small farmers and consumers\, and some small farmers sell products directly to consumers in urban areas through internet sites. In Japan\, sales of perishable products between small farmers and agribusinesses are combined by ICT in some regions\, which reduces their costs as well as maintains their freshness. \nThis workshop will discuss recent trends in innovative technologies for perishable supply chains\, focusing on benefits to small farmers\, who are the majority in APO members. In countries of East Asia and the Pacific (excluding the People’s Republic of China) and South Asia\, about 70-80% of farms are smaller than 2 ha (UN Food and Agriculture Organization\, 2015). This workshop will also promote the goal of contributing to innovation capacity under the APO Vision 2025. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on New Technology for Human Resources Management in the Public Sector
DESCRIPTION:Sound HR management is key to building high-performance organizations. Qualified\, motivated employees are closely tied to overall organizational productivity. This holds true for both the public and private sectors. The global pandemic and other trends have accelerated the adoption of technology into working life. Many organizations have teams working virtually in some way\, whether it is with distributed teams\, remote managers\, or other hybrid models. These changes are accompanied by evolving practices in recruitment\, training\, performance management\, and workforce planning. The private sector has led the integration of new technology solutions into HR functions\, but public-sector managers need to follow suit and adapt these technologies to their context. \nHR technology is one of the keys in ensuring that governments can attract\, retain\, and develop talent in the 21st century. However\, the public sector lags behind the private sector in this. The technology available includes cloud-based HR tools\, AI-based solutions\, and advanced people analytics. They can be used across different stages of HR management such as recruitment\, training\, engagement\, and performance management. Beyond productivity\, these tools can be used to improve employee wellbeing. \nThis training course aims at enabling managers and HR personnel to navigate the range of HR tools for use in the public sector. It will include exposure to new HR technology and tools\, their potential benefits\, and frameworks to integrate them in systematic\, culturally sensitive ways. Participants will be encouraged to think practically about the role of technology in HR management. \nFor more details please click on PN.
