SUMMARY:Multicountry Observational Study Mission on Implementing the Sufficiency Economy Theory to Sustain Community Development
DESCRIPTION:Introduced by the late King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej in the height of Thailand’s economic crisis in 1997\, the sufficiency economy is a philosophy based on the fundamental principles of Thai culture. It is a method of economic development based on moderation\, prudence\, and social immunity which uses knowledge and virtue as guidelines for living. These economic principles and approaches have gained recognition globally as a model for sustainable development. \nIn 2023\, the Thailand International Cooperation Agency reported that 23\,000 Thai villages had adopted this economic theory and it had spread to neighboring countries such as Lao PDR. In the agrifood sector\, current overproduction\, oversupply\, and overconsumption of agricultural products cause environmental pollution\, depletion of natural resources\, and market price fluctuations that affect incomes and livelihoods in rural communities. \nThe sufficiency economy theory holistically addresses these community issues by moderating and diversifying production while balancing environmental and social resilience. This study mission will observe and learn about the successful adoption of the theory through best practices. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Blockchain Technology Application in e-Government
DESCRIPTION:In the evolving digital landscape\, governments in APO members are recognizing the potential of AI and blockchains for enhanced public services and citizen engagement. These technologies can strengthen egovernment programs\, promote public administration transformation\, and provide transparent and secure public services. \nBlockchains are an emerging\, disruptive technology that have the potential to transform ICT services. In blockchains\, transactions are approved and validated with the consensus of a majority of stakeholders. Blockchains\, augmented virtual reality\, and AI are expected to improve digital public services in the future. \nAPO has promoting this technology to member countries for the past few years by focusing on SMEs and other sectors. To continue these efforts and as part of APO public-sector productivity capacity-building initiatives\, this training will introduce and strengthen applications of blockchain solutions in the public sector to establish more secure\, agile\, cost-effective structures while increasing trust and accountability. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Social Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:Social enterprises refer to businesses that prioritize purpose over profit in operational and strategic decisions. They exist to solve social and/or environmental problems and reinvest to achieve their goals. Despite varying definitions in different countries\, social enterprises are commonly understood as economic entities standing at the intersection of business and social good\, spearheading innovative solutions that generate economic value as well as drive social and environmental impacts. Nurturing social entrepreneurship has become a pivotal strategy for social innovation and sustainable\, inclusive socioeconomic growth. \nAccording to a 2024 WEF report\, social enterprises globally generate around USD2 trillion in annual revenue and create nearly 200 million jobs. However\, the significance of social entrepreneurship is often unrecognized\, hindering the potential contributions of social enterprises. It is thus necessary to raise awareness of social entrepreneurship and develop a nurturing environment for it. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Smart Manufacturing Specialists
DESCRIPTION:SM integrates cutting-edge technologies such as the IoT\, AI\, robotics\, data analytics\, and cloud computing to optimize processes\, enhance productivity\, and improve decision-making in manufacturing environments. In response to the rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape driven by technological advances\, the APO and China Productivity Center established the COE on SM in 2019. In 2022\, the APO and COE on SM published a National Implementation Framework on SM. Among the framework elements are planning and developing a roadmap for SM adoption\, cultivation of talent\, and current workforce upskilling through education and training. \nThe APO introduced a training course on SM specialists last year to expand the role of existing productivity specialists by equipping them with SM knowledge. In 2024\, the APO and COE on SM continue this effort with improvements to help SM specialists play pivotal roles in implementing and managing SM systems to ensure operational efficiency\, quality improvement\, and competitiveness in global markets. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:According to the UN FAO (2023)\, agricultural mechanization is needed to make agrifood systems more sustainable from economic and social aspects\, such as labor productivity\, poverty reduction\, food security\, and health and well-being. Machinery is indispensable for modern farming. As human labor has moved from agriculture to other sectors\, agricultural workers have been replaced with machinery. Such equipment reduces the time needed for farm management and enables scaling up of operations\, thus increasing agricultural productivity. However\, the effectiveness of agricultural machinery differs by country and region among APO members. For example\, labor-saving machines are not very effective for economies with low labor costs\, while sophisticated machines like agrirobots are preferred despite their high costs due to the labor shortage. Therefore\, benchmarking is necessary to promote the adoption of appropriate mechanization models. As a continuing effort after the 2023 workshop\, the focus in 2024 will be on assessment criteria to guide participants in applying suitable mechanization in their respective country. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Development of Rural Economies through Smart Villages
DESCRIPTION:The smart village concept is a transformative approach that leverages digital infrastructure and innovations to enhance the quality of life and economic opportunities in rural communities. It contributes to addressing urgent needs such as enhancing economic opportunities and preventing urban migration by providing sustainable\, innovative solutions for agriculture\, energy\, healthcare\, and education. \nThe adoption of smart villages is crucial for Asia-Pacific countries due to the significant portion of their populations residing in rural areas\, often facing challenges such as geographic isolation\, inadequate infrastructure\, and limited access to services. However\, challenges to adoption include a lack of policies\, affordable connectivity\, digital literacy\, and sustainable models for service delivery. \nThis workshop will explore the smart village concept\, showcase best practices from successful smart village implementation\, and discuss a possible demonstration project in APO members. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Assessing Gains from Green Productivity Projects
DESCRIPTION:The APO GP concept guides enterprises\, especially SMEs\, in improving their environmental performance with simultaneous increases in productivity\, quality\, and employee well-being. The APO Handbook on GP is a guide to methodologies\, tools\, and techniques for enterprises to adopt for tangible gains. \nProjects and initiatives following the GP framework to improve the triple bottom line of productivity\, quality\, and environmental well-being have cost implications and require resource mobilization. Hence\, to determine the impact of GP projects\, the six-step\, 13-task GP methodology emphasizing monitoring of GP projects has been implemented for management review. The tools address concerns such as the actual rate of return\, quantification of improvement in productivity\, and ascertaining the scalability and replicability of options. \nThis course will examine the nuances of the GP methodology from assessment and monitoring perspectives. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Conference on Open Innovation in the Public Sector
DESCRIPTION:According to a 2024 Harvard University report\, open innovation is a strategy that suggests the best ideas\, solutions\, and people to solve difficult organizational problems. This type of innovation is being used by a growing number of public-sector organizations to adopt good ideas from around the world to improve the delivery of public services. \nImplementing open innovation in the public sector requires a shift in mindset from a traditional\, closed approach to government to one that is more open\, collaborative\, and participatory. It involves creating mechanisms for engagement\, such as innovation labs\, hackathons\, crowdsourcing platforms\, and public–private partnerships\, as well as policies that support data sharing\, intellectual property management\, and service co-creation. \nIn collaboration with APO Center of Excellence on Public Sector Productivity\, this conference is expected to harness the collective intelligence of public sector organizations in order to improve governance and deliver better outcomes for citizens. \nFor more details please click on PN.
