SUMMARY:Development of Public-sector Productivity Specialists
DESCRIPTION:The APO Manual on Public-sector Productivity\, 2020\, mentioned various aspects to improve the motivation and skill level of public officials\, strengthen management systems\, and enhance performance given the changing environment and current commitment to publicservice renewal. Reforms have been undertaken by many APO member governments to improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of public resources\, increase accountability\, and enhance responsiveness to citizens’ needs. \nWhile advances in technology adoption have played a major role in the enhancement of public-service delivery\, better performance of publicsector organizations\, and improvement of overall productivity\, continued upskilling and reskilling of public-sector professionals remain important. This course is aimed at building up and expanding pools of public-sector productivity specialists in APO members. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Multicountry Observational Study Mission on Digital Innovation for SMEs
DESCRIPTION:Digital upgrading has become indispensable for SMEs’ productivity and competitiveness in the constantly changing business environment. According to a WEF report in 2023\, SMEs acknowledge the importance of digital technologies and the innovation induced\, yet the majority face challenges in mobilizing financial and human resources\, accessing suitable technologies and infrastructure\, effectively using data\, and maximizing the value of digitalization. Sharing suitable strategies and good practices at both national and corporate levels can help SMEs in APO members identify practical steps to initiate\, implement\, and sustain digital upgrading and innovation. \nThe ROC has been proactively facilitating SME digital transformation in the region as the APO Center of Excellence on Smart Manufacturing and via other international bodies such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. This study mission will provide an opportunity to observe the ROC’s strategies for and good practices of digital innovation for SMEs. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Digital Kaizen for SMEs
DESCRIPTION:The APO Productivity Outlook 2022 and numerous other studies reported that COVID-19 had impacted manufacturing productivity negatively. Manufacturers need to leverage digital technologies to streamline business operations\, enhance process efficiency\, and improve product quality and customer satisfaction. Although the pandemic accelerated the adoption of technologies\, SMEs still face challenges in effective use of data and maximizing returns on investment. \nSMEs can integrate technologies like the IoT into kaizen activities to enhance productivity\, foster digitalization\, and enable business growth. The APO\, with support from the China Productivity Center and Japan Productivity Center\, is developing a Digital Kaizen Handbook. This training course will draw references from that handbook for incorporating IoT and kaizen processes. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Development of Productivity Specialists
DESCRIPTION:The Development of Productivity Specialists Program focuses on capacity building for individuals who undertake and lead productivity improvement initiatives at the organizational level. Since its inception three decades ago\, it has produced practitioners and specialists\, with NPO professionals as the main beneficiaries. The program has also been used to develop more specific expertise including Green Productivity and Public-sector Productivity. \nIn collaboration with the MPC\, this year’s program content and design focus on providing NPO professionals with knowledge of the latest productivity techniques and tools\, particularly digital transformation and generative AI. The combination of conventional and digital tools will enhance the capability of productivity specialists as well as strengthen the role of NPOs. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Benchmarking of Agrimechanization Models to Enhance Agricultural Productivity
DESCRIPTION:According to the UN FAO (2023)\, agricultural mechanization is needed to make agrifood systems more sustainable from economic and social aspects\, such as labor productivity\, poverty reduction\, food security\, and health and well-being. Machinery is indispensable for modern farming. As human labor has moved from agriculture to other sectors\, agricultural workers have been replaced with machinery. Such equipment reduces the time needed for farm management and enables scaling up of operations\, thus increasing agricultural productivity. However\, the effectiveness of agricultural machinery differs by country and region among APO members. For example\, labor-saving machines are not very effective for economies with low labor costs\, while sophisticated machines like agrirobots are preferred despite their high costs due to the labor shortage. Therefore\, benchmarking is necessary to promote the adoption of appropriate mechanization models. As a continuing effort after the 2023 workshop\, the focus in 2024 will be on assessment criteria to guide participants in applying suitable mechanization in their respective country. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course for Assessors of the APO Certification Bodies
DESCRIPTION:Since the APO started the Accreditation and Certification Program in 2018\, nine CBs have been accredited and two NPOs or their affiliated organizations are in various stages of development to become CBs. With these developments and to remain abreast of international practices\, the APO-AB is endeavoring to raise the bar of its assessment standards so that CBs strictly comply with those practices and gain stakeholders’ trust. \nThe 6th Annual Meeting of the APO-AB Council held in February 2024 recommended building up the APO-AB registered assessors’ pool and organizing a training course for developing an assessor group to assist in conducting CB assessments. The training course for Assessors of APO CBs aims to build assessors’ competency\, explain assessment documents and procedures\, and inculcate report-writing skills. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Labor–management Relations in the Digital Era
DESCRIPTION:Driven by advanced technology\, conventional work styles requiring high labor intensivity have shifted toward less physical interaction. Employers and employees no longer need to be under the same roof\, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to these changes\, labor–management relations have become more complex and challenging. The rise of remote work and flexibility\, the gig economy\, and freelancing create new challenges for both employers and employees in sustaining productive labor–management relations and leveraging digital technology for productivity. The APO has promoted labor–management relations to improve employee motivation\, treatment\, benefits\, and labor practices in a competitive environment. This workshop will revisit the changes that have occurred in many workplaces with digitalization\, explore their implications for workers’ well-being and working conditions\, and assess new challenges for policy interventions. \nFor more details please click on PN.
