DESCRIPTION:SMEs play a pivotal role in economies\, comprising over 90% of all businesses and significantly contributing to employment and innovation. However\, integrating ESG principles and aligning with the SDGs present notable challenges for these enterprises. According to a 2022 OECD report\, SMEs often struggle with limited resources\, insufficient access to sustainable finance\, and a lack of expertise in implementing sustainable practices. Additionally\, a 2025 UNCTAD report highlighted that the complexity of international sustainability standards and the pressure from larger corporations for sustainability disclosures add to the burdens faced by SMEs. SUMMARY:Workshop on Sustainable Practices in Green Tourism
DESCRIPTION:While sustainable tourism broadly refers to all sustainable forms of tourism in natural\, urban\, and cultural settings\, green tourism refers to a specific type of sustainable tourism focused on nature-based experiences\, where flora and fauna are the core attractions. Both emphasize environmental preservation (APO\, 2009). According to the UNWTO’s “Global Policy Review” (2024)\, analyzing 80 national tourism policies\, 95% recognized nature as a primary tourism asset and 100% identified sustainability as a core value in tourism development. However\, the review highlighted a lack of concrete\, detailed plans for sustainable management practices and underscored that private-sector stakeholders faced challenges related to limited resources\, insufficient knowledge\, and inadequate expertise when implementing nature-positive actions. SUMMARY:Training of Trainers on Smart Manufacturing for SMEs
DESCRIPTION:The NPC\, India is the host of the COE on IT for Industry 4.0 aiming to support industries in APO members to become more competitive and productive in the global digital economy. Established in 1959\, ACMA plays a vital role in policy advocacy\, trade promotion\, technology upgradation\, and skill development in the automotive component sector. With over 850 members\, ACMA contributes significantly to the growth of the sector\, which plays a key role in India’s manufacturing GDP and exports. The association also emphasizes sustainability\, innovation\, and the adoption of SM practices. \nAs a follow-up activity to the multicountry training course on SM in the ROC in 2023\, this consultation and ToT initiative was requested by the NPC and ACMA to enhance the competencies of NPC officers and ACMA members responsible for SM-related activities. SUMMARY:Multicountry Observational Study Mission on Smart Manufacturing and Digital Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:Global supply chains are the backbone of manufacturing. They have faced disruptions from events like the COVID-19 pandemic\, geopolitical tensions\, and natural disasters\, highlighting the need for further digitalization. It is vital for firms to pick up early signals of uncertainties\, thereby gaining sufficient time to orchestrate operations and resources to withstand disruptions (ADB\, 2023). The IoT enables the creation of digital threads providing real-time insights into not only equipment performance and production status but also supply chain logistics. AI algorithms can be used for predictive maintenance\, quality control\, and production optimization as well as predicting future demand and potential constraints in supply chains and determining root causes of quality issues outside manufacturing such as in supply chains (APO\, 2024). \nThe ROC\, the APO Center of Excellence on SM\, will show how enterprises can maximize digitalization in their operations. DESCRIPTION:Climate finance was at center stage during COP29\, bringing together nearly 200 countries in Baku in 2024. While addressing the needs of developing countries and focusing on the role of SMEs in the green transition\, the finance commitments were tripled to USD300 billion annually from USD100 billion annually by 2035. \nRecognizing the gap in capacity building and expanding the coverage of the APO’s GP concept\, the GP 2.0 roadmap mentions regulations and financial incentives as key approaches in response to current trends and GP initiatives. This workshop aligns with the GP 2.0 roadmap and aims to bridge knowledge gaps and connect stakeholders in building a robust finance ecosystem. Moreover\, capital deepening\, allowing direct access to finance\, directly impacts total factor productivity\, especially for SMEs that rely on constrained cash flows\, have limited financial opportunities\, and lack knowledge of regulatory frameworks\, which restrict business growth. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Study Mission on Advanced Industrial Technologies for Digital\, Lowcarbon Transformation
DESCRIPTION:The Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology (NPO Turkiye) established 10 model factories (learning factories) in 10 provinces to guide manufacturers across the country. Consultants in those factories in Turkiye are providing lean transformation consultancy to manufacturers. Now the challenge is providing digital transformation consultancy besides lean transformation consultancy. \nThe current gap in digital readiness across many Turkish factories\, combined with limited local examples of successful lean–digital integration\, underscores the need for a structured\, strategic approach. To address this\, a group of model factory consultants will undertake a study mission to the COE on SM and successful companies to observe best practices\, gain practical insights\, and explore how ROC manufacturers have successfully aligned digital solutions.
