SUMMARY:Workshop on Leadership of Service Transformation in the Lifestyle and Service Sectors
DESCRIPTION:According to the “APO Productivity Databook”\, the service sector accounts for a substantial portion of GDP in many APO members. In 2021\, services constituted over 60% of GDP in economies like Japan and Singapore\, and similar trends were observed in other members. This highlights the sector’s key role in driving economic growth through innovation and high-value services. These sectors face shifting consumer demands\, tech changes\, and rising competition\, making strong leadership vital for post-COVID transformation. \nIn one of the APO’s recent comprehensive studies in 2024\, “Best Strategies for Ensuring SME Business Continuity in Advanced APO Economies”\, almost all successful SMEs across the ROC\, Japan\, the ROK\, and Singapore adopted agile management practices\, digital transformation\, and structured strategic foresight leadership\, enabling them to recover and grow during the pandemic\, with many even exceeding their pre-COVID-19 performance levels. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Smart Manufacturing Specialists
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the APO launched a training course to develop SM specialists to support SMEs in digital transformation in response to the growing demand for professionals with both productivity and digitalization expertise. In 2024\, in response to feedback from the inaugural course\, it included more hands-on IoT exercises to enhance practical understanding. Participants have since multiplied the knowledge in their home countries through local training programs\, consultancy to industry\, and establishing Industry 4.0 training and research centers to build national capacity. In response to rapid advances in AI\, this year’s course includes new content on generative AI applications in SM\, use cases such as automated fault diagnosis\, sensor data monitoring\, and report generation. The course continues to evolve in line with emerging technologies\, reinforcing the APO’s commitment to developing futureready manufacturing capabilities in its member economies. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Explainable AI and Blockchain for Smarter Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:This P-Talk explores the transformative potential of explainable AI (XAI) and blockchain in reshaping global supply chains. Dr. Avinash BM\, Associate Professor at the Kazakh-British Technical University\, introduces how these technologies can enhance trust\, transparency\, and resilience in supply chains\, which are increasingly vulnerable to shocks. He highlights the unique role of XAI in ensuring fairness\, accountability\, and bias-free decision-making and demonstrates how blockchain guarantees data integrity\, traceability\, and secure cross-border collaboration. \nThe talk underscores that productivity in supply chains must be redefined to encompass transparency\, equity\, and sustainability as well as speed and cost. By linking technology adoption with values such as trust and inclusiveness\, this P-Talk challenges stakeholders to view AI and blockchain not as add-ons but as essential pillars of smarter\, fairer\, and greener supply chains. \nPlease click here to watch. \nSubscribe to our APO YouTube channel for more videos and updates on our activities. \nFor any inquiries\, please write to p-talk@apo-tokyo.org.

SUMMARY:Workshop on AI Management Systems
DESCRIPTION:Integrating AI into productivity strategies addresses inefficiencies\, manages risks primarily in compliance and security\, and streamlines adoption by optimizing resources and standardizing workflows. This boosts innovation\, operational efficiency\, and alignment with goals\, driving sustainable growth. In developing countries\, AI bridges infrastructure\, education\, and healthcare gaps\, enhancing productivity and economic growth. \nThe AI Management System (AIMS) is an international standard specifying the requirements to develop\, provide\, and utilize responsible AI systems. AIMS drives innovation while addressing risks and societal challenges tied to AI adoption. Influenced by organizational objectives\, structure\, processes\, and stakeholder expectations\, it balances governance with innovation. Integrated with existing systems\, it manages risks\, trustworthiness (security\, safety\, fairness\, transparency)\, and third-party relationships. Regular reviews ensure alignment with evolving AI uses and goals (ISO/IEC 42001\, 2023). \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Study Mission to a Nonmember Country on Innovative Technologies for Food Security
DESCRIPTION:According to the UN FAO\, in 2023\, 2.33 billion people\, an estimated 28.9% of the global population\, were moderately or severely food insecure. Innovative technologies can increase production and distribution. Precision agriculture includes using GPS\, IoT sensors\, drones\, and AI to monitor crop health\, soil quality\, and resource usage\, while reducing waste\, improving yields\, and allowing farmers to make data-driven decisions. However\, these innovative technologies have not yet disseminated widely in APO members due to a lack of resources\, knowledge\, and infrastructure. \nWith limited farming area\, the Netherlands utilizes advanced agricultural technologies for efficient\, sustainable food production. It optimizes crop growth through precision agriculture and minimizes water and fertilizer use. Vertical farming and controlled-environment agriculture allow crop growth indoors. \nThis study mission to the Netherlands will give participants opportunities to view such innovative technologies and how they positively affect food security. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Training Course on Enhancing Utility Energy Performance
DESCRIPTION:The World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2024 by the IEA highlights the benefits of adopting energy conservation and management practices in thermal and electrical utilities\, such as improved efficiency\, cost savings\, and reduced environmental impact. This aligns with the APO’s Green Productivity concept to strengthen the triple bottom lines of productivity\, quality\, and profitability with the least environmental impact and UN Sustainable Energy for All initiative\, in particular UN SDG 7. \nThe WEO 2024 stresses addressing challenges such as upfront capital\, technical expertise\, and behavioral change. This training course at the Centre for Excellence in Training for Energy Efficiency hosted by the NPC\, India\, which is equipped with demonstration utilities\, provides an ideal platform for strengthening participants’ technical expertise in conducting energy utility performance assessment. The solutions emerging can then be aligned with national plans on improving energy productivity in industry. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Good Regulatory Practice in the Automotive Industry to Achieve Net-zero Emission Targets
DESCRIPTION:xEVs are growing in popularity around the world\, but they require big investments in new infrastructure and facilities such as charging stations and motor and battery factories. For policymakers and industry leaders\, it is important to choose the right strategy that fits their national situation while still helping to meet climate goals. This is where GRPs can help by guiding governments to set policies that are suitable\, sustainable\, and supportive of all industry players. \nThis workshop will explore the different technology paths being followed in the automotive industry\, highlighting the ongoing transition to xEV options in APO member economies\, including relevant smart policies based on GRPs to smoothen the transition and make it more inclusive among different stakeholders involved. \nFor more details please click on PN.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Policies for Gender Equality and Competitive Female Labor
DESCRIPTION:There is a strong link among gender equality\, productivity\, and national economic competitiveness. Countries with greater equality between genders are more productive\, have higher levels of economic growth\, and better development outcomes. However\, in the world of work\, women everywhere tend to experience higher unemployment\, unfair treatment\, working poverty due to lower wages\, precarity in employment\, and higher informal-sector employment rates caused by various reasons and backgrounds. \nAs the APO Vision 2025 promotes social inclusion including promotion of female participation in the labor market\, this workshop offers an opportunity to explore ways to eliminate gender inequality in the workplace\, allowing women to contribute more to the economy and earn decent livelihoods\, especially in APO members. It will also promote a better understanding of the current situation around gender issues and the incorporation of measures to create opportunities for women in employment policies and plans. \nFor more details please click on PN.
