On 16 April 2026, the Assistant Vice Minister for International Affairs of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Yukio Teramura, paid a courtesy visit to APO Secretary-General Dr. Indra Pradana Singawinata at the APO Secretariat in Tokyo.
The meeting was a continuation of the ongoing collaboration on the Hiroshima AI Process (HAIP) through the APO’s Genuine AI Action (GAIA) initiative. The discussions reviewed recent developments and explored opportunities for continued coordination on AI-related initiatives.
The APO Secretariat highlighted its activities under the GAIA initiative, including podcast episodes, panel discussions, and potential participation in international events. Assistant Vice Minister Teramura welcomed these efforts and emphasized the importance of promoting broader understanding of AI governance through international cooperation under the framework of HAIP. He noted the value of collaboration with international organizations, particularly those with operational experience in developing countries, and appreciated APO’s contribution to promoting broader understanding of the HAIP.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close communication and exploring future collaboration on AI-related initiatives.
After the meeting, Assistant Vice Minister Teramura participated in an APO GAIA Podcast recording at the APO Secretariat. The episode will be made available in 2026 on the APO’s YouTube channel and the APO GAIA website, which is currently in development.
