After intensive discussions, the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) established by Japan for alternate wetting and drying (AWD) in the Philippines was completed by the EC and published in June 2024, and it was approved by the Joint Committee between Japan and the Philippines on 3 February 2025. The EC continues to discuss the applications of innovative technologies such as water-level monitoring via satellite imaging to upgrade the JCM methodology for AWD. For Vietnam, the EC continues to discuss innovative approaches that reduce GHG emissions and improve agricultural productivity such as AWD.
In February 2025, in addition to the Philippines and Vietnam, the Government of Cambodia agreed to participate in the EC because the country also has high potential for GHG reductions from the project. The MAFF requested the APO Secretariat to take the role of proponent/implementing agency for the project in Cambodia.
The 1st EC was held online in April 2026, which was mainly conducted by the MAFF since the JAIF procedure took time. This 2nd EC aims to continue to discuss the key issues following the 1st EC and consider the appropriate manner for the next steps.
