This P-Talk highlights how water management in rice paddies can reduce methane emissions while supporting climate-smart rice production. Dr. Kazunori Minamikawa, Deputy Project Leader at the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences, explains the underlying mechanisms of climate-smart water management, its practical implications, and approaches for encouraging farmer adoption. He also discusses the role of Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), a scheme for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through cooperation with developing countries. The APO will begin implementation of a project supporting this scheme in 2026, with the support of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan.
