Workshop on Global Trends in Marine Debris Policies and SMEs

Marine debris has become an increasingly critical environmental challenge across the Asia-Pacific region, threatening marine ecosystems, coastal communities, fisheries, tourism, and sustainable economic development. As APO member economies face growing pressure to reduce plastic pollution, improve resource efficiency, and advance circular economy initiatives, effective marine debris management has become a key policy and development priority.

This workshop aims to enhance participants’ understanding of global trends, policy frameworks, and practical approaches to marine debris management, with a particular focus on prevention, reduction, resource recovery, and circular economy strategies. Through expert presentations, country case studies, interactive discussions, and site visits, participants will examine innovative technologies, policy instruments, public–private partnerships, and the role of SMEs in addressing marine debris challenges. The program will also provide a platform for knowledge exchange among participants from APO member economies, enabling them to share experiences, lessons learned, and best practices while fostering regional collaboration toward more sustainable, resilient marine debris management.
