Advancing Sustainable Aquaculture with AI

19 Jun 2025

The China Productivity Center, the Republic of China (ROC), held the face-to-face Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability Applied in Aquaculture in Tainan, the ROC, 3–6 June 2025. The workshop supported the APO Vision 2025 by promoting smart, sustainable solutions in a critical sector. It aimed to enhance understanding of how AI technologies, such as predictive analytics, image recognition, and automation, can contribute to more efficient, resilient, and environmentally responsible aquaculture practices.

The workshop brought together 25 participants from 12 APO member economies, guided by four resource persons from the ROC, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand. Sessions covered diverse topics including climate adaptation, disease management, and supply chain optimization through AI. Participants engaged in thematic group work to develop four actionable AI roadmaps, and each participating APO member shared a report on aquaculture development and digital readiness in their local economy. A highlight of the program was the site visits to the Apollo Aquatic Product Co. and the International Center for the Scientific Development of Shrimp Aquaculture at National Cheng Kung University, which demonstrated practical applications of AI in aquaculture operations.

One participant shared that they obtained knowledge about AI and smart feeder systems that would help minimize the environmental impact of water quality monitoring, increase aquaculture production, and mitigate climate change. In addition to enhancing technical capacity, the project fostered regional dialogue and identified opportunities for collaboration to address shared challenges such as limited expertise and resource constraints, reinforcing the APO’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable productivity growth.
